5.1. Methodological overview

The learning process that is designed for this subject is based on:

Theoretical classes. It will be used articipatory master class. During the exhibition will be encouraged dialogue by asking questions, Problem Based Learning, resolving doubts, etc.

Practical classes. They will be developed in the Dental Clinic. After completing the course, students must submit a portfolio made during the implementation of the various proposed activities. Attendance at practices and the presentation of the portfolio will be mandatory.

Team work. Group work will include search and literature review, writing and oral presentation in class encouraging reflection and debate, a series of works that previously be reviewed in tutorials by the teacher.

Tutorials. Devoted to answer questions or provide specific bibliography of a specific topic in relation to the theoretical and practical contents of the subject.

5.3. Syllabus

The program to achieve the expected results includes the following activities:

Theoretical contents

    Medically-compromised patients concept. Risk assessment in the dental office. Patients with infectious diseases. Anxiety and stress.
    The patient with cardiovascular disease.
    Infectious endocarditis. Alterations of hemostasis. Patients receiving antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants.
    The cancer patient. Immunosuppressed patients. renal failure. Liver failure.
    The patient with respiratory, digestive and endocrine diseases. The pregnancy.
    The patient with mental and neurological disorders.
    Special patient child. concept, epidemiology and social context. Decreased sensory child patient. Dental Clinic adapted to deaf and blind child patient. Autism.
    Patients taking bisphosphonates.
    Principles anesthetic, sedation, general anesthesia in special patients. Situations of adverse reactions to local anesthetics.
    Introduction to gerodontology. biological changes caused by aging. Aging oral area.
    Systemic diseases in old age. Geriatric Pharmacology.
    Psychology in elderly patients.
    Gerodontology diagnosis.
    Caries in elderly patient. restorative and endodontic considerations.
    periodontal disease in elderly patients.
    Pathology of the oral mucosa in old age. iatrogenic traumatic injuries.
    bucodentarias infections in old age.
    Precancer and oral cancer in elderly patients.
    Restoration with implants in the elderly. oral implantology in the elderly.
